Problem

A hockey puck of mass 0.25 kg0.25\,\text{kg} is initially at rest on smooth ice. A player strikes it with his stick so that a constant horizontal force acts for 0.50 s0.50\,\text{s} and the puck attains a speed of 4 m/s4\,\text{m/s}. After 0.50 s0.50\,\text{s}, the player’s stick loses contact with the puck and no other horizontal forces act on it (assume the ice is perfectly smooth). (i) Describe the state of motion of the puck during the first 0.50 s0.50\,\text{s} while the force is acting. (ii) Describe the state of motion of the puck during the next 3.0 s3.0\,\text{s} after the force is removed. (iii) Calculate the distance travelled by the puck in the 3.0 s3.0\,\text{s} interval mentioned in part (ii). (iv) Give a reason for your answers in parts (ii) and (iii) with reference to the net external force acting on the puck.
