Problem

A single-turn rectangular loop of conducting wire is mounted on a light rigid frame so that it can rotate freely about a horizontal axis through its centre. The loop is placed in a uniform magnetic field that is directed horizontally. (i) Define magnetic dipole moment for a planar current-carrying loop and specify its direction convention. (ii) With the help of a clearly labelled sketch, describe qualitatively why the loop experiences a turning effect when it is inclined at an arbitrary angle to the field. Enumerate the physical factors on which the magnitude of this turning effect depends. (iii) Explain why the turning effect becomes zero when the plane of the loop is perpendicular to the magnetic field. (iv) Identify the positions of stable and unstable rotational equilibrium for the loop and justify your answer.
