Problem

A sound source in air emits waves of wavelength 0.68 m0.68\,\text{m}. The speed of sound in air is 340 m s−1340\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}, while in water it is 1500 m s−11500\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}. Assuming the frequency of the sound remains unchanged when the wave enters water, answer the following questions. (i) Compute the frequency of the sound produced in air. (ii) Calculate the wavelength of this sound in water. (iii) Compare the wavelengths obtained for air and water and explain briefly why they differ although the frequency is the same.
