Problem

When aqueous sodium sulfate is mixed with aqueous barium chloride at room temperature, a precipitate forms immediately. Answer the following with respect to this reaction. (a) Write the balanced molecular equation for the reaction that occurs between sodium sulfate and barium chloride in aqueous solution. (b) Rewrite the equation from part (a) as a complete ionic equation, explicitly showing all strong electrolytes as separate ions. (c) From the complete ionic equation, identify every ion that is a spectator ion. For each ion you list, justify why it is classified as a spectator. (d) Write the net ionic equation for the reaction and demonstrate, with explicit accounting of atoms and electric charge, that both mass and charge are conserved.
