Problem
Three separate one-dimensional collisions are performed with identical smooth spheres of equal mass m. In every case, sphere A moves with speed u and sphere B is at rest before impact.
I. Perfectly elastic collision.
II. Perfectly inelastic collision (spheres stick together).
III. Partially elastic collision with coefficient of restitution e=0.5.
Arrange the three cases in ascending order of loss of total kinetic energy.
(a) I<II<III
(b) III<II<I
(c) I<III<II
(d) II<I<III
