Problem

In an experimental setup, a uniform magnetic field of magnitude 0.020 T0.020\,\text{T} is produced in a region that is 6.0 cm6.0\,\text{cm} long. A beam of protons, each of kinetic energy 3.0 keV3.0\,\text{keV}, is directed into this region such that the initial velocity of the protons is perpendicular to both the magnetic field and a simultaneously applied uniform electric field E⃗\vec E. The aim is to make the protons pass through the region without deflection. (i) Calculate the speed of the protons corresponding to the given kinetic energy. (ii) Determine the magnitude of the electric field that must be applied so that the protons travel straight through the region. State the direction of E⃗\vec E relative to B⃗\vec B for the desired outcome.
