Problem

Consider two geometric progressions, each consisting of nn terms and each having the same positive first term aa. The first progression has common ratio r1r_{1} where 0<r1<10<r_{1}<1, while the second has common ratio r2r_{2} where r2>1r_{2}>1. (i) Write the expressions for the sums S1S_{1} and S2S_{2} of the two progressions in terms of a,r1,r2a, r_{1}, r_{2} and nn. (ii) Obtain an expression for S2−S1S_{2}-S_{1} in its simplest form. (iii) Keeping a,r1a, r_{1} and r2r_{2} fixed, explain with reasons how the value of S2−S1S_{2}-S_{1} changes as nn increases.
