Problem

The average density of nuclei is often quoted as 2.3×1017 kg m−3.2.3\times10^{17}\,\text{kg}\,\text{m}^{-3}. Assume that the mass of a single nucleon is 1 u=1.66×10−27 kg.1\,\text{u}=1.66\times10^{-27}\,\text{kg}. (a) Starting from the definition of density and the empirical relation between nuclear radius and mass number, derive an expression for the constant R0R_0 in terms of the given numerical values. (b) Using the value of R0R_0 obtained in part (a), estimate the radius of a 197 ⁣Au^{197}\!\text{Au} nucleus. (c) Compare your estimated radius with the commonly accepted value obtained when R0R_0 is taken to be 1.2×10−15 m,1.2\times10^{-15}\,\text{m}, and discuss any discrepancy.
