Problem

A cricket ball of mass 150 g moving towards a batsman at 20 m s−1^{-1} is hit straight back along the same line with a speed of 30 m s−1^{-1}. The contact between bat and ball lasts for 0.012 s. (i) Determine the magnitude and direction of the average force exerted on the ball. (ii) Regulations stipulate that the average force on the bat should not exceed 1000 N for safety. Calculate the minimum contact time required to keep the average force within this limit for the stroke described above. (iii) Explain briefly why a follow-through of the bat helps the player achieve the condition found in part (ii).
