Problem

A beam of identical positively charged particles of charge qq and speed vv is injected into a region of uniform magnetic field BB. The direction of the magnetic field is changed in four separate trials as described below: Trial I: v⃗\vec v is parallel to B⃗\vec B. Trial II: v⃗\vec v makes an angle of 30∘30^{\circ} with B⃗\vec B. Trial III: v⃗\vec v is perpendicular to B⃗\vec B. Trial IV: v⃗\vec v makes an angle of 150∘150^{\circ} with B⃗\vec B. Answer the following questions for these four trials. (a) Identify the trial(s) in which the particles experience zero magnetic force. Give a reason for your choice. (b) Arrange the remaining trials in the increasing order of the magnitude of the magnetic force acting on a particle. Justify your answer without using numerical calculation. (c) Explain why the magnetic force on a moving charge depends on the sine of the angle between v⃗\vec v and B⃗\vec B.
