Problem

Spectroscopic observations show that the intensity of sunlight reaching Earth is maximum at a wavelength of 500 nm. For all numerical work, take the constant b=2.9×10−3 m Kb=2.9\times10^{-3}\,\text{m\,K} wherever required. (i) Write the relation connecting the wavelength corresponding to maximum emission and the absolute temperature of the emitting surface. (ii) Using the given numerical value of the constant, calculate the approximate surface temperature of the Sun. (iii) Identify the region of the electromagnetic spectrum to which the wavelength of 500 nm belongs and state the likely colour appearance of the Sun on this basis.
