Problem

A tuning fork vibrates in air and produces an audible sound. Answer the following questions related to the quantities that describe this sound wave. (a) Define (i) wavelength, (ii) frequency, and (iii) speed of a sound wave. (b) Establish the relation among these three quantities for a progressive sound wave without performing any mathematical derivation. (c) The fork vibrates at a frequency of 512 Hz512\,\text{Hz}. If the speed of sound in air is taken as 340 m/s340\,\text{m/s}, calculate the corresponding wavelength of the sound produced. (d) Explain qualitatively how the wavelength will change, if the same tuning fork is sounded under water where the speed of sound is 1500 m/s1500\,\text{m/s}. (No calculation required.)
