Problem

A short pulse of light travels through three transparent media P, Q and R as follows: • in medium P it covers a distance of 0.60 m0.60\,\text{m} in 2.0 ns2.0\,\text{ns}, • in medium Q it covers 0.75 m0.75\,\text{m} in 3.0 ns3.0\,\text{ns}, • in medium R it covers 0.45 m0.45\,\text{m} in 2.0 ns2.0\,\text{ns}. Take the speed of light in vacuum as 3.0×108 m s−13.0\times10^8\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}. (i) Calculate the absolute refractive index of each medium. (ii) Arrange the media in increasing order of optical density.
