Problem

The width of a river is 30 m30\,\mathrm{m}, its velocity is 4 m s−14\,\mathrm{m\,s^{-1}}, and the rowing speed of a boatman relative to water is 5 m s−15\,\mathrm{m\,s^{-1}}. (1) Make the velocity diagram for crossing the river in the shortest time. Then find this shortest time, the net velocity of the boatman, and the drift along the river. (2) Can the boatman reach a point directly opposite on the other shore? If yes, make the velocity diagram, state the direction in which he should row, and find the crossing time. (3) How long will it take him to row 10 m10\,\mathrm{m} upstream and then return to his starting point?
