Problem
Two aqueous solutions of acetic acid, CH3COOH, are prepared at 25 °C. Sample I is 0.10 M, and Sample II is 0.010 M. The acid-dissociation constant for acetic acid at this temperature is Ka=1.8×10−5.
(a) Calculate the percent ionization of acetic acid in Sample I.
(b) Calculate the percent ionization of acetic acid in Sample II.
(c) Compare the two calculated values. Explain, in terms of chemical equilibrium, why the percent ionization differs between the two solutions.
