Problem

While mapping a straight countryside road, a cyclist starts from village PP taken as the origin and travels in three stages along the same road: Stage-1: 12 km12\,\text{km} west to point QQ. Stage-2: x kmx\,\text{km} east to point RR. Stage-3: 5 km5\,\text{km} west to point SS. At the end of Stage-3 the cyclist is 8 km8\,\text{km} west of village PP. (a) Taking west as the negative direction, write an equation connecting xx with the given data and solve for xx. (b) Using the value of xx obtained, calculate the total distance travelled by the cyclist. (c) Find the magnitude of the net displacement of the cyclist from PP to SS and state its direction.
