Problem

A ball of mass 0.20 kg0.20\,\text{kg} is projected vertically upward from ground level with a speed of 15 m s−115\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}. Just after reaching its highest point, it is struck vertically upward by a bat that exerts a constant force of 50 N50\,\text{N} for 0.010 s0.010\,\text{s}. (a) Calculate the height the ball rises before it is struck by the bat. (b) Determine the speed of the ball immediately after the impact with the bat. (c) Find the additional height gained by the ball after the hit before it comes momentarily to rest again. (d) Compute the work done on the ball by the bat during the impact and verify that it equals the change in kinetic energy of the ball between just before and just after the hit.
