Problem
A monochromatic beam of light of frequency ν>ν0 is incident normally on a photosensitive metal plate placed in a photocell.
(i) State what is meant by the term "saturation current" in the context of the photoelectric effect.
(ii) Explain qualitatively why the saturation current varies directly with the intensity of the incident light but is nearly independent of its frequency, provided ν>ν0.
(iii) If the intensity of the beam is doubled while keeping the frequency unchanged, describe the change you expect in (a) the saturation current and (b) the stopping potential, giving reasons in each case.
