Problem

A driver uses a rear-view mirror that is a section of a spherical convex mirror whose radius of curvature is 1.2 m1.2\,\text{m}. A truck 1.8 m1.8\,\text{m} high is travelling directly behind the car on the mirror’s principal axis. (a) When the truck is 6.0 m6.0\,\text{m} from the mirror, calculate the position of its image measured from the mirror. (b) Determine the linear magnification of the image and hence find the apparent height of the truck in the mirror. (c) The truck closes in so that it is now 3.0 m3.0\,\text{m} from the mirror. Recalculate the image distance and the apparent height. (d) Comment, with quantitative support from your answers, on how the image characteristics change as the truck approaches the mirror.
