Problem

A delivery drone operates along an east–west straight line and follows these four consecutive stages starting from point A: Stage A: Flies 800 m800\,\text{m} due east at a steady speed of 10 m s−110\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}. Stage B: Hovers (remains stationary) for 40 s40\,\text{s} to unload a parcel. Stage C: Flies 300 m300\,\text{m} due west at 5 m s−15\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}. Stage D: Flies 700 m700\,\text{m} due east at 20 m s−120\,\text{m\,s}^{-1} and stops at point B. Answer the following: (a) Calculate the time taken in each of the three flying stages. (b) Find the total distance travelled by the drone and its final displacement from point A. (c) Determine the total time for the entire operation, including the hovering period. (d) Compute (i) the average speed and (ii) the magnitude of the average velocity of the drone for the complete trip from A to B.
