Problem

Deuterium (12H^{2}_{1}\text{H}) consists of one proton and one neutron. Its atomic mass (including one electron) is 2.014102 u2.014102\,u. (i) What is meant by the term mass defect of a nucleus? (ii) Using mp=1.007276 um_{p}=1.007276\,u, mn=1.008665 um_{n}=1.008665\,u and electron mass 0.0005486 u0.0005486\,u, calculate the binding energy per nucleon of the deuterium nucleus. Use 1 u=931.5 MeV/c21\,u=931.5\,\text{MeV}/c^{2}. Show all steps clearly.
