Problem

A photoelectric cell is first illuminated with monochromatic light of frequency ν1\nu_1 that is just above the threshold frequency ν0\nu_0 of the emitter metal. The intensity of the light is adjusted so that the saturation current is Isat,1I_{\text{sat,1}}. The light source is then replaced by another monochromatic source of higher frequency ν2\nu_2 (ν2>ν1\nu_2 > \nu_1) but with the same intensity. Finally, while keeping the frequency at ν1\nu_1, the intensity is doubled. (i) Draw the three labelled II–VV curves (A), (B), and (C) on common axes. (ii) Mark IsatI_{\text{sat}} and V0V_0 for each curve on your sketch. (iii) Provide a qualitative explanation for the relative magnitudes of the three saturation currents and the three stopping potentials.
