Problem
A horizontal layer of oil of thickness 5mm floats on the surface of water in a trough. The absolute refractive indices are: oil 1.45, water 1.33, air 1.00. A ray of light in air falls on the oil surface making an angle of 35∘ with the normal at the point of incidence.
(a) Find the angle of refraction in the oil.
(b) Determine the angle at which the ray is incident on the oil–water boundary.
(c) Calculate the angle of refraction in water.
(d) Draw a neat, labelled ray diagram for the complete path described above and compute the lateral displacement between the original incident ray and the final emergent ray in water.
