Problem

4He^{4}\text{He} contains two protons and two neutrons. The masses of a free proton and neutron are 1.0073 u1.0073\,\text{u} and 1.0087 u1.0087\,\text{u}, respectively. The measured atomic mass of 4He^{4}\text{He} is 4.0026 u4.0026\,\text{u}. Neglect electron mass. (a) Calculate the mass defect Δm\Delta m of a single 4He^{4}\text{He} nucleus in atomic mass units. (b) Convert this mass defect to kilograms using 1 u=1.66×10−27 kg1\,\text{u}=1.66\times10^{-27}\,\text{kg}.
