Problem

Medium X has absolute refractive index 1.331.33 and medium Y has absolute refractive index 1.521.52. A third medium Z is such that the relative refractive index of Z with respect to Y is 45\dfrac{4}{5}. (i) Calculate the relative refractive index of Y with respect to X, nYXn_{YX}, and that of X with respect to Y, nXYn_{XY}. (ii) Show that nYX nXY=1n_{YX}\,n_{XY}=1 for the pair of media X and Y. (iii) Determine the absolute refractive index of medium Z. (iv) Arrange the three media X, Y and Z in ascending order of optical density, giving a brief reason for your choice.
