Problem

A student claims that a convex mirror can never produce a real image on a screen, whereas a convex (converging) lens can do so under suitable conditions. (i) Explain, with the help of labelled ray diagrams, why a convex mirror always forms only a virtual image whatever be the position of the object. (ii) Using a separate diagram, show how a convex lens can produce both a real image and a virtual image. State clearly the object positions for each case. (iii) List any two practical consequences of this fundamental difference in everyday applications of the two optical devices.
