Problem

A hockey stick strikes a puck and exerts a net horizontal force that varies with time. The force is directed along +x+x and obeys the following description: • From t=0t=0 to t=0.020 st=0.020\text{ s} the force increases linearly from 0 N0\text{ N} to 120 N120\text{ N}. • From t=0.020 st=0.020\text{ s} to t=0.040 st=0.040\text{ s} the force decreases linearly back to 0 N0\text{ N}. For t>0.040 st>0.040\text{ s}, the net horizontal force is zero. The puck has mass 0.15 kg0.15\text{ kg} and is initially at rest. (a) Calculate the total impulse delivered to the puck during the 0.040 s0.040\text{ s} interaction. (b) Determine the speed of the puck immediately after t=0.040 st=0.040\text{ s}. (c) A coach wants the puck to leave the stick with the same speed found in part (b) but prefers to apply a constant force instead of a time-varying one. Determine the magnitude of the constant force that must be applied over the same 0.040 s0.040\text{ s} interval to achieve this goal.
