Problem

Sphere A of mass 0.25 kg0.25\,\text{kg} moves with speed 5 m s−15\,\text{m s}^{-1} in a direction 40∘40^{\circ} above the horizontal towards sphere B of mass 0.50 kg0.50\,\text{kg}. Sphere B is moving horizontally towards A with speed 2 m s−12\,\text{m s}^{-1}. At the moment of impact the line of centres is horizontal. The coefficient of restitution is 0.70.7. (i) Determine the horizontal component of velocity of sphere A immediately after the collision. (ii) Determine the horizontal component of velocity of sphere B immediately after the collision.
