Problem

A deuteron (nucleus of 2 ⁣H^2\!\mathrm{H}) consists of one proton and one neutron. Data: mp=1.00727 u\mathrm{m_p}=1.00727\,\text{u}, mn=1.00866 u\mathrm{m_n}=1.00866\,\text{u}, mass of deuteron nucleus =2.01355 u=2.01355\,\text{u}, 1 u=931.5 MeV/c21\,\text{u}=931.5\,\text{MeV}/c^{2}. (i) Compute the mass defect of the deuteron. (ii) Hence calculate its nuclear binding energy in MeV. (iii) Express the mass converted to energy as a percentage of the total mass of the separated nucleons.
