Problem

Liquid oxygen at its boiling point has a tabulated volume magnetic susceptibility χm=+3.5×10−3\chi_m = +3.5\times10^{-3} (positive, from standard reference tables). A sample is shaped as a thin disc and placed in a magnetometer that applies a uniform field H0H_0 and reports χapp=M/H0\chi_{\rm app} = M/H_0. ((a)) Find χapp\chi_{\rm app} when the applied field is normal to the flat face of the disc (Na=1N_a = 1). ((b)) Find χapp\chi_{\rm app} when the applied field lies in the plane of the disc (Na≈0N_a \approx 0). ((c)) State the fractional error made by reading off χm\chi_m directly from the normal-field measurement without correction.
