Problem

Neon gas at 0∘C0^\circ\mathrm{C} and one atmosphere has density 0.900 kg m−30.900\,\mathrm{kg\,m^{-3}} and molar mass 20.18 g mol−120.18\,\mathrm{g\,mol^{-1}} (CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics). Each neon atom has Z=10Z = 10 electrons; a computed atomic value for the root-mean-square orbital radius of a typical neon electron is ⟨r2⟩1/2=0.35 A˚\langle r^2\rangle^{1/2} = 0.35\,\text{\AA} (Fraga, Karwowski and Saxena, Handbook of Atomic Data). ((a)) Estimate the diamagnetic volume susceptibility of neon gas using χm=−μ0NvZe2⟨r2⟩/6me\chi_m = -\mu_0N_vZe^2\langle r^2\rangle/6m_e. ((b)) The measured value, after conversion from the tabulated molar susceptibility, is about −3.9×10−9-3.9\times10^{-9}. Comment on the size of the discrepancy, and explain in one or two sentences why neon shows no competing paramagnetic term of the kind that dominates a substance such as liquid oxygen.
