Relativistic Energy and Four-Momentum
Multiply the four-velocity by the rest mass and the ladder principle hands you a new four-vector, . That one line of algebra carries a scandal: its spatial part is not the Newtonian but , and its time component — patience — turns out to be the energy, divided by . Energy and momentum, kept in separate ledgers since the first mechanics course, are components of a single spacetime arrow, mixed by boosts exactly as mixes with . This article establishes the object and, more importantly for a physics that must survive frame changes, establishes why nature had no choice: a symmetric glancing collision, analyzed in two frames, shows that momentum conservation is arithmetically impossible with and forced to be ; a boost argument then shows that whoever conserves relativistic momentum in every frame has silently agreed to conserve energy too — the two laws are one four-vector statement, or neither holds. The electrodynamics stakes are direct. Light itself carries four-momentum — null, with — and the momentum the conservation chapter assigned to fields (, argued there from stress bookkeeping) is exactly what this article's photon accounting demands. Radiation pressure, solar sails, and the recoil in every emission problem of the radiation chapter are four-momentum conservation wearing lab clothes. And dynamically, is the object the field tensor will push: the covariant Lorentz force, five articles ahead, reads "rate of change of four-momentum equals charge times field tensor times four-velocity." The mechanics companion (Four-Velocity, Four-Momentum, and Mass-Energy Equivalence) owns the invariant-norm route — , the rest-energy expansion, threshold tricks. Our treatments interlock rather than repeat: here the conservation logic, the photon, and the field-side bookkeeping electrodynamics needs.
- The four-momentum is : relativistic momentum and energy are one four-vector's components.
- The in the momentum is not optional: a symmetric glancing collision, viewed from two frames, conserves momentum only if (Lewis–Tolman).
- The zero-component theorem: if the spatial part of a four-vector is conserved in every inertial frame, its time component is conserved too — energy conservation rides free with momentum conservation.
- The invariant norm gives the mass-shell relation (derivation owned by the mechanics companion; used here constantly).
- Photons sit on the light cone of momentum space: , so and — light carries momentum, and the field momentum density of the conservation chapter is its continuum ledger.
- Ultrarelativistically regardless of mass; nonrelativistically — one hyperbola interpolating between Newton and light.
- Key idea: energy and momentum are the time and space components of , conserved together as one four-vector or not at all — and light joins the ledger with .
Energy and momentum unify into the four-momentum with invariant norm : conservation of the full four-vector is a frame-proof law (momentum conservation in all frames forces energy conservation), and massless light participates with .
Where this lives today
Four-momentum is the accounting standard of experimental physics. Every collider event is recorded as a list of 's; every "discovery plot" is a histogram of some invariant built from them (usually the invariant mass of a candidate decay's summed four-momenta — a Higgs is a bump at 125 GeV/ in exactly the norm ). Missing-energy searches invert the zero-component theorem: since the four-vector must balance and three components are measured, an imbalance is a particle that left without signing the ledger — the neutrino was predicted by this logic (Pauli, 1930) before any detector saw one, and dark-matter searches at the LHC still run on it. On the null side of the shell, photon momentum has become an instrument. Laser cooling pumps atoms with directed kicks until their thermal momentum is gone — microkelvins by momentum conservation — and optical tweezers hold cells and chromosomes with piconewtons of focused light pressure (2018 Nobel). At the extreme end, inertial-fusion capsules are crushed partly by ablation reaction and radiation pressure at W/cm², and pulsar timing arrays model the momentum kicks of anisotropic photon emission on neutron stars. Within this chapter, now waits for its dance partner: the field tensor will contract with to drive — the covariant Lorentz force of Relativistic Dynamics of a Charged Particle — and the field's own ledger will be formalized in The Electromagnetic Stress-Energy Tensor.
Origins · 1 minMax Planck and how this was discovered
Planck's role in this article is specific and underappreciated: in 1906 he published the first correct relativistic dynamics — momentum , force as — quietly correcting Einstein's own 1905 paper, which had briefly endorsed frame-dependent "longitudinal and transverse masses." (Einstein adopted Planck's formulation; the retired "relativistic mass" of the warning box died first at Planck's hands.) He was also relativity's earliest heavyweight advocate: the first prominent physicist to lecture on the theory, the referee-editor who shepherded the 1905 paper into Annalen der Physik, and the doctoral advisor whose student von Laue wrote the first relativity textbook. History's neat twist: the same man had, in 1900, introduced the quantum of action — so both halves of the photon's four-momentum , the relativistic packaging and the quantum coefficient, trace to Planck. His constant now defines the kilogram; his 1906 momentum steers every accelerator beam on Earth. Personal integrity matched the physics: he stood by Einstein against the anti-relativity campaigns of the 1920s, and lost his son Erwin to the Gestapo in 1945 for resistance against Hitler.
The physical picture
Why must momentum be ? Not aesthetics — bookkeeping under a boost. Momentum conservation is a vector statement, and boosts tamper with the ingredients asymmetrically: velocities transform through the addition law, which is nonlinear and mixes components, while whatever multiplies the velocity had better compensate, or a collision that balances in one frame will unbalance in another. Newtonian fails this audit at order — the glancing-collision derivation below makes the failure explicit and the repair unique. The repaired momentum has a tidy reading from the previous article: differentiate position by the wristwatch instead of the observer's clock, and conservation survives every boost. The deeper picture is the merger. Once momentum is the spatial part of a four-vector, the time slot is not decoration — it is a physical quantity that mixes with momentum under boosts, is conserved whenever momentum is (the zero-component theorem below), and reduces at low speed to plus the familiar kinetic energy. There is exactly one name for a conserved scalar that counts : energy. Relativity does not add an energy law to the momentum law; it discovers that they were two shadows of one law, cast by different observers' slicings — precisely as "time" and "position" are shadows of one event. Geometrically, a particle's possible four-momenta live on a hyperboloid — the mass shell , one sheet per particle species, asymptotic to the light cone. Boosting slides the state along the shell; no push slides it off. Massless quanta live on the cone itself ( exactly), which is why light can carry momentum with no mass to its name: momentum was never "mass times velocity" — that was the low-speed disguise — it is the spatial component of an energy-carrying arrow, and light carries the arrow at maximal tilt. The radiation-pressure forces the conservation chapter computed from field stresses are this cone-dwelling momentum, delivered in bulk.
The math: the object, the forced γ, and the theorem that unifies the ledgers
The construction is the ladder principle applied once. Rest mass — measured in the particle's own frame, hence a Lorentz scalar by fiat — times the four-velocity of the previous article:
where: four-vector status is automatic (scalar × four-vector), the spatial part defines the relativistic momentum , and the labeling of as is, at this point, a promissory note — redeemed by Derivations A and B, which show that is what collisions actually conserve and that is the conserved scalar that deserves energy's name. Contract (1) with itself and the fixed norm of the four-velocity () delivers the invariant
where: the second form — the mass-shell relation — is the single most-used equation of relativistic kinematics; its derivation and its consequences (rest energy , the Newtonian expansion, invariant-mass threshold tricks) are owned by the mechanics companion Four-Velocity, Four-Momentum, and Mass-Energy Equivalence and quoted here without re-derivation. Note what (2) is: the statement that the norm of is the same in every frame, with the rest mass as the invariant label. Energy and momentum are frame-gossip; the shell they live on is the physics.
The goal is the Lewis–Tolman result: if momentum conservation is to hold in every inertial frame, the momentum of a particle moving at speed must be — the is extracted, not postulated. The strategy is a symmetric thought experiment: two identical particles throw themselves at each other transversally, each in its own frame; symmetry fixes the outcome, the velocity-addition law (owned by Lorentz Transformations) fixes the measured velocities, and demanding balance fixes the momentum function uniquely. Watch for the honesty clause in Step 1: we assume momentum is some function of speed times 's direction, and let the physics choose the function.
Step 1. The ansatz. Suppose momentum is with an unknown even function of speed, so Newton survives at low speed. The task is to determine .
Step 2. The symmetric setup. Frames and move with relative velocity along . In , particle is thrown along with small transverse speed (, eventually ); in , particle (identical, mass ) is thrown along with the same transverse speed in its own frame. They meet, graze elastically, and reverse their transverse velocities. The situation is a mirror: what says about , says about .
Step 3. Measure from . By the velocity-addition law, 's velocity components in are and — the transverse velocity is diluted by , the kinematic fact (time dilation acting on ) that breaks Newtonian bookkeeping. To first order in , 's speed is , so its momentum function is .
Step 4. Demand transverse balance in . The collision flips each particle's -momentum; total conservation requires 's magnitude to equal 's:
using in the limit of a vanishingly gentle throw. Cancel :
Why the limit is legitimate: transverse momentum balance must hold order by order in ; the leading order already fixes , and carrying the terms merely confirms consistency. And why Newtonian fails: it would demand , false for any — momentum conservation with cannot survive even one boost.
Step 5. Reconcile with the four-vector. : the collision has independently discovered the spatial part of . The two routes — physical (conservation must be frame-proof) and structural (build with scalars and ) — meet on the same object, which is the sort of double bookkeeping that makes a formalism trustworthy. The mechanics companion reaches (1) by the structural route; this derivation is the experimental-logic route, and their agreement is the point. Why the transverse dilution is exact: the Lorentz transformation gives and when , so — no approximation. The low-speed audit recovers Newton, as required.
Go deeper · Derivation B · 2 minThe zero-component theorem — energy conservation rides free
The goal is the unification theorem: in relativity there is no such thing as momentum conservation alone — if the spatial components of the total four-momentum are conserved in every inertial frame, the boost algebra forces the time component to be conserved too, and its low-speed limit identifies it as the energy. The strategy is two lines of linear algebra on the deficit vector, then a physical reading. This theorem is why relativistic collisions never need separate energy postulates, and why "mass–energy equivalence" is a consequence of frame-proof bookkeeping rather than an independent axiom.
Step 1. Define the deficit. For any process (collision, decay, emission), let
is a four-vector (a sum of four-vectors). "Momentum conserved in frame " reads for .
Step 2. Boost the deficit. Suppose in every inertial frame. In a frame boosted by along :
using . Demanding for any forces
The time component is conserved, with no further physical input. (The converse also holds: conservation of in all frames forces the spatial components, by the same one-liner run backward. The four components stand or fall together — conservation laws come in four-vectors.)
Step 3. Name the conserved scalar. What is ? Expand one particle's contribution at low speed (the expansion itself is the mechanics companion's derivation; we quote its result): . The conserved time component counts, up to the constant offsets , exactly the Newtonian kinetic energy — and it keeps being conserved when the offsets change, i.e., when rest mass converts to motion or motion to rest mass. That is the operational content of : the only frame-proof conservation law containing kinetic energy has mass on the same ledger.
Step 4. Read it against electrodynamics. The theorem's jurisdiction is any closed system — including fields. When the radiation chapter's oscillating charge loses energy to the wave zone, four-momentum bookkeeping demands the field carry both (Poynting's theorem, the E7 energy ledger) and (the field momentum of Momentum Density of the Electromagnetic Field). Neither ledger is optional: a theory with field energy but no field momentum would violate this derivation in a boosted frame. The covariant packaging of those field ledgers into one tensor is The Electromagnetic Stress-Energy Tensor, later in this chapter. The boost algebra above is the complete proof of the zero-component lemma. The low-speed expansion of Step 3 can be spot-checked: at , keV while keV — agreement to the expected correction, confirming that reduces to the Newtonian kinetic energy at low speeds.
The last inhabitant of the mass shell is the one with no mass. Set in (2): exactly, the null case,
where: is the propagation direction and is the wave four-vector certified in Four-Vectors and the Metric Tensor — the quantum proportionality (one constant, both components) is why the photon's kinematics were already fixed by classical wave geometry. A photon cannot be brought to rest — no boost reaches the cone — and its energy is pure momentum's ransom: absorb power from a light beam and you absorb force ; reflect it and the force doubles. This is the particulate face of the field-momentum density the conservation chapter derived from stress bookkeeping — same ledger, continuum and quantum editions.

Worked examples
1 · An LHC proton, audited on the shell (confidence builder)
Setup. A proton ( MeV) circulates at TeV. Find , , the momentum, and check how close the shell hugs the cone.
Step 1. . The wristwatch article's bookkeeping applies verbatim: ten lab hours cost this proton 5.2 s of proper time.
Step 2. Momentum from the shell (2): — i.e. to eight decimal places: .
Step 3. Speed: — the famous "3 m/s slower than light." In SI, kg·m/s and J: each proton carries the kinetic energy of a flying mosquito, times of them per beam.
Step 4. Read the audit. At this altitude on the shell, energy and momentum are interchangeable currencies (), and the machine's dipoles — which steer momentum, via the Lorentz force — are equivalently steering energy. The magnetic rigidity that sets the LHC's 8.3 T field is a four-momentum component in engineering units.
The lesson: compute from energy, momentum from the shell, speed last (it is the least informative number on the shell's upper reaches).
2 · The solar sail — four-momentum conservation with zero mass on one side (exam level)
Setup. Sunlight at Earth's orbit delivers W/m². A sail of area m² and total mass 10 kg flies (a) perfectly absorbing, (b) perfectly reflecting. Find the force and the velocity gained in a year, and connect to the field-momentum ledger.
Step 1. Photon bookkeeping. Light carrying energy flux carries momentum flux — equation (3) per photon, or the conservation chapter's integrated over a column moving at . Absorbed: the sail inherits it all,
Step 2. Reflected: the photon's momentum reverses, so the sail absorbs twice the flux: — about 9 μN per square meter of mirror. (This factor of two is the same one that doubles radiation pressure on a conductor versus an absorber in the wave chapter.)
Step 3. The year of patience. At m/s² (reflecting), one year of continuous thrust gives — from standing start to escape-adjacent speeds with no propellant, which is why sails are the only propulsion whose "fuel" ledger is pure four-momentum transfer from the Sun. (Checks: JAXA's IKAROS flew this physics in 2010; the Newtonian treatment is fine since throughout.)
Step 4. The covariant moral. Nothing material crossed from Sun to sail — no mass, only null four-momentum. Conservation ran through equation (3) and the zero-component theorem: the field's became the sail's momentum, the field's became sail kinetic energy plus absorbed heat, and both books balanced in every frame simultaneously because they are one four-vector's components.
The lesson: "light pushes" is not a metaphor — (or mirrored) is four-momentum conservation with a null leg, and is why lasers don't knock you over but can sail spacecraft.

If nothing can exceed the speed of light, what exactly grows without bound as an accelerator keeps pushing?
Momentum and energy — the four-vector's components — while the speed saturates. The clean way to see it: divides lab distance by wristwatch time, and the wristwatch nearly freezes as , so diverges even as plateaus. Every push of the LHC's RF cavities adds momentum and energy honestly ( still holds); the speedometer just stops being the interesting gauge — between injection (0.999997) and full energy (0.99999999) the speed gains almost nothing while momentum grows sevenfold. Magnetic rigidity, synchrotron frequency, collision reach: all are functions of , not , which is why accelerator physicists quote GeV and not meters per second.
Where did the idea that mass increases with velocity go wrong — textbooks used to teach it?
Nothing in it is false; it is a bookkeeping choice that ages badly. Defining preserves the cosmetic form , but the costume rips as soon as dynamics starts: the ratio of force to acceleration is for pushes along the motion and transverse, so no single velocity-dependent scalar plays Newton's mass in . Worse, it buries the subject's actual invariant — the norm , the frame-proof label on the mass shell that particle physics means by "the mass of the proton." Modern practice (and Planck's original 1906 formulation, ironically) keeps invariant, puts the in the momentum where the collision logic derives it, and treats as what the old "relativistic mass" was trying to be. If you meet in an older text, translate: it is energy in mass units, nothing more.
Does E = mc² mean mass is a form of energy, or energy has mass, or both — and what does electrodynamics add?
Both directions are operationally real, and electrodynamics supplied the first evidence. Rest energy is spendable: nuclear fission converts of rest mass to kinetic energy, annihilation converts all of it (PET scanners image with the 511 keV photons). Energy is weighable: a hot gas or a charged capacitor is heavier than its cold or discharged twin by , and a system of massless photons can have mass (warning box). The electrodynamic pedigree: two decades before 1905, Thomson and then Heaviside computed that a charged sphere's field resists acceleration — field energy acting as inertia — and Poincaré's field momentum (1900) contains the kernel dimensionally. Einstein's step was to make the equivalence universal and two-way, via exactly the kind of light-emission bookkeeping this article's photon accounting performs. The full covariant statement — field energy, momentum, and stress as one object — is this chapter's stress-energy tensor, where "the mass of the field" gets its honest, tensorial meaning.
Why is momentum conservation in ALL frames the right requirement — isn't one frame enough for a law?
The principle of relativity (the first postulate) is precisely the demand that laws hold in every inertial frame — a law valid in one frame only would make that frame detectable, resurrecting the ether. This demand is what gives the Lewis–Tolman argument teeth: Newtonian momentum is conserved in any single frame if you posit it there, but the same collision then fails balance in a boosted frame, so "conserved " cannot be a law of physics, only a bookkeeping accident of one observer. Requiring frame-proof conservation selects uniquely and, via the zero-component theorem, drags energy conservation along. Notice the pattern — it is the chapter's engine: relativity rarely adds forces or fields; it takes conservation statements and covariance demands and returns the unique repaired law. Magnetism itself will be exhibited as exactly such a repair two articles ahead.
How do experimentalists actually use four-momentum conservation when they can't detect everything?
By inverting it. A detector measures the four-momenta of visible products; the beam's total is known; any deficit is a signed confession that something invisible carried it away. Pauli's 1930 neutrino is the founding example — beta-decay electrons had a continuous spectrum, so either conservation failed or a neutral ghost shared the ledger; the ghost won, twenty-six years before direct detection. Modern searches refine the trick: at hadron colliders only the transverse components balance cleanly (beam remnants escape down the pipe), so "missing transverse momentum" is the dark-matter and neutrino signature; at machines the full four-vector balances and even the recoil mass of the unseen system is reconstructed from . Every such analysis is the zero-component theorem run as an instrument: because the four components are one conserved object, three measured components and a boost's worth of algebra testify about the fourth.
The photon's E = pc looks like the ultrarelativistic limit of a massive particle. Is a photon just a very light particle at very high gamma?
The limit is smooth but the endpoint is qualitatively different, and both halves matter. Smoothness: a particle with tiny mass at enormous has , indistinguishable from a photon at any finite experimental resolution — which is why "is the photon exactly massless?" is an experimental question with a bound (current limits: eV from galactic-field arguments, with dispersion-free radio arrival over cosmological distances as an independent check; a mass would make the wave chapter's vacuum dispersive, frequency-dependent). Difference: at exactly, the rest frame ceases to exist — there is no observer for whom the photon is at rest, no proper time along its worldline (the previous article's ), and its four-momentum is null rather than timelike, forever on the cone no boost can leave. Massless is not the limit of light — it is a different orbit of the Lorentz group, and electrodynamics in vacuum lives entirely on it.
What happens to four-momentum conservation when radiation reaction is involved — the E9 articles said energy bookkeeping there is subtle?
The four-vector law itself never bends; what gets subtle is attribution between the particle and its own near field. Radiation reaction (the E9 self-force pair) is four-momentum conservation applied to a charge and its field as one closed system: the wave zone exports at the Larmor rate, and the particle's mechanical ledger must fund it. The subtlety — the Schott term — is that the near field acts as a revolving credit line: over a cycle or a complete event the books balance cleanly (particle loses what radiation carries), but instant by instant the near field can lend and reabsorb, so the mechanical four-momentum alone is not conserved on short times, only the total. This article's contribution to that story is the frame discipline: because conservation is a four-vector statement, any proposed self-force law must respect it in every frame — the covariant checks that constrain the Abraham–Lorentz machinery (and its E11 covariant completion) are zero-component-theorem logic applied mercilessly.
