Relativistic Doppler Effect and Aberration

Two articles ago the chapter's opening act certified a curious quadruple: Four-Vectors and the Metric Tensor showed that a wave's frequency and wavevector ride together as kμ=(ω/c,k)k^\mu=(\omega/c,\mathbf{k}), ran one drill with it, and promised the payoff later. This is later. Boost kμk^\mu once and two complete theories fall out simultaneously: the relativistic Doppler effect — how motion retunes every frequency — and the aberration of light — how motion redraws every direction. One transformation, two phenomena, because frequency and direction were never independent: they are the time and space faces of one null four-vector, exactly as energy and momentum are for a photon (Relativistic Energy and Four-Momentum's E=pcE=pc, riding along at ℏ\hbar's exchange rate). Relativity's additions to Doppler's 1842 formula are not corrections at the edges; they are qualitatively new physics. There is a transverse Doppler shift — a source moving broadside is redshifted by pure time dilation, something no classical wave theory permits — first isolated by Ives and Stilwell in 1938 in what remains one of relativity's cleanest confirmations. Aberration acquires the headlight effect: an isotropically glowing body at high γ\gamma beams half its light into a forward cone of half-angle 1/γ1/\gamma, the kinematic engine behind the beamed inferno of blazar jets. And the pair together explain the two most-quoted numbers in observational cosmology: the CMB dipole — our own 370 km/s made visible as a 3.4 mK temperature pattern across the sky — and the "superluminal" motion of jet knots that appear to cross the sky at ten times lightspeed while breaking no law at all.

Key takeaways
  • Frequency and propagation direction form the null four-vector kμ=(ω/c,k)k^\mu=(\omega/c,\mathbf{k}) (ω=c∣k∣\omega=c|\mathbf{k}|); one boost of kμk^\mu yields Doppler and aberration together.
  • Doppler: ω′=γω(1−βcos⁡θ)\omega'=\gamma\omega(1-\beta\cos\theta); head-on this is ωobs=ω0(1+β)/(1−β)\omega_{\text{obs}}=\omega_0\sqrt{(1+\beta)/(1-\beta)} — and at O(β)O(\beta) the classical formula returns with no source/observer asymmetry (no medium, no preferred frame).
  • Transverse Doppler: at 90°90° reception the shift is pure time dilation, ωobs=ω0/γ\omega_{\text{obs}}=\omega_0/\gamma — zero classically; measured by Ives–Stilwell (1938) via the forward/backward average (fb+fr)/2=γf0(f_b+f_r)/2=\gamma f_0.
  • Aberration: cos⁡θ′=(cos⁡θ−β)/(1−βcos⁡θ)\cos\theta'=(\cos\theta-\beta)/(1-\beta\cos\theta); solid angles transform by the square of the Doppler factor, so an isotropic emitter at speed β\beta beams half its photons into a cone of half-angle ≈1/γ\approx1/\gamma — the headlight effect, the kinematic face of the beaming in Relativistic Larmor Formula (Liénard's Result).
  • The Doppler factor δ=1/[γ(1−βcos⁡θ)]\delta=1/[\gamma(1-\beta\cos\theta)] compresses everything: frequencies scale as δ\delta, arrival rates as δ\delta, observed flux as δ3–4\delta^{3\text{–}4} — blazar physics in one symbol; apparent transverse speeds reach βapp=βsin⁡θ/(1−βcos⁡θ)>1\beta_{\text{app}}=\beta\sin\theta/(1-\beta\cos\theta)>1 with nothing superluminal.
  • A blackbody stays a blackbody under boosts, with T′=δTT'=\delta T direction by direction — which is exactly why our motion imprints a 3.36 mK dipole on the 2.7255 K CMB.
  • Key idea: boost the null four-vector kμk^\mu and read both slots — the time slot is the complete relativistic Doppler formula, the space slots are aberration, and every beaming, dipole, and superluminal illusion in astrophysics is bookkeeping downstream.
The core insight

Light's frequency and direction transform as one null four-vector kμ=(ω/c,k)k^\mu=(\omega/c,\mathbf{k}): the boost's time slot gives the relativistic Doppler law ω′=γω(1−βcos⁡θ)\omega'=\gamma\omega(1-\beta\cos\theta) — including the purely relativistic transverse shift — and its space slots give the aberration law cos⁡θ′=(cos⁡θ−β)/(1−βcos⁡θ)\cos\theta'=(\cos\theta-\beta)/(1-\beta\cos\theta), the headlight effect and the Doppler-factor phenomenology of jets falling out as corollaries.

Where this lives today

Doppler-and-aberration bookkeeping is working infrastructure across physics. Cosmology: the CMB dipole is the reference velocity for all of observational cosmology, its aberration partner now a Planck-verified cross-check, and "moving blackbody stays blackbody" underwrites both. High-energy astrophysics: blazar catalogs, gamma-ray-burst energetics, and the one-sidedness statistics of radio jets are all inversions of the δ\delta dial from Example 2 — quoted luminosities routinely carry factors of δ4\delta^4 that this article's reader can audit. Precision metrology: relativistic Doppler is the systematic error budget of atomic clocks — optical-lattice clocks correct for time-dilation shifts from thermal atomic motion at the 10−1810^{-18} level, Ives–Stilwell's granddaughter experiments — and satellite navigation's frequency plans are equation (1) applied to every downlink. Accelerator physics: inverse-Compton and free-electron-laser light sources are double-Doppler machines — an optical wave "seen" by a γ∼103\gamma\sim10^3 electron beam is upshifted by ∼2γ\sim2\gamma into its rest frame, re-emitted, and upshifted by ∼2γ\sim2\gamma again on the way out, turning eV photons into MeV beams by aberration-and-Doppler alone. And laser cooling — every magneto-optical trap on Earth — is nothing but Doppler selectivity: an atom moving into a red-detuned beam is shifted into resonance and pushed back, equation (1) acting as a velocity-sensitive brake.

Christian Doppler
1803–1853 · Prague and Vienna

Doppler announced his principle in 1842 to a nearly empty session of the Royal Bohemian Society in Prague: the perceived pitch of any wave must depend on the motion of source and observer, and — his actual ambition — the colors of binary stars might reveal their orbits. The star application overreached (stellar velocities shift colors imperceptibly; it took spectral lines to cash his idea), and his acoustic claim met sturdy skepticism until Buys Ballot, in 1845, famously stationed trumpeters on a locomotive of the Utrecht line and musicians with perfect pitch beside the track — the pitch bent exactly as Doppler said. He did not live to see any of the maturity: dead of tuberculosis at 49, a decade before spectroscopy made his effect astronomy's principal speedometer. The relativistic completion rebuilt his formula from spacetime symmetry — adding the transverse shift he could not have imagined and deleting the medium he took for granted — yet kept his name, fairly: the idea that motion retunes waves was his, and the four-vector kμk^\mu is its final, frame-proof form. Today his principle measures exoplanet wobbles of meters per second, blood flow in arteries, and the expansion of the universe — the binary-star dream, vindicated beyond recognition.

The physical picture

Start with the object, because the object is the insight. A monochromatic wave is a pattern of crests, and its phase ϕ=k⋅x−ωt=−kμxμ\phi=\mathbf{k}\cdot\mathbf{x}-\omega t=-k_\mu x^\mu counts crests — an integer-anchored count all observers must agree on, which is precisely the scalar-phase argument by which Four-Vectors and the Metric Tensor certified kμk^\mu as a four-vector (its photon drill even extracted a Doppler factor at β=0.6\beta=0.6 and deferred the general theory here). For light in vacuum, ω=c∣k∣\omega=c|\mathbf{k}| (Monochromatic Plane Waves in Vacuum), so k⋅k=0k\cdot k=0: the wave four-vector is null, living on the same light cone that organized the retarded solutions one article ago. Now the geometric picture of what a boost does to it. A boost preserves the light cone but shears the vectors on it: null vectors slide along the cone, their time components (frequencies) stretching or shrinking while their spatial directions tilt toward the motion. Doppler is the stretch; aberration is the tilt; they are components of one motion of one vector, which is why every correct Doppler formula smuggles an angle and every correct aberration formula smuggles a γ\gamma. The classical wave theory in a medium had two vectors to play with — velocity relative to the medium, of source and of observer separately — and so produced two different formulas for "approach at speed vv." Relativity has no medium: only the relative null-vector geometry survives, one formula, symmetric in who moves. That the symmetric formula then contains a new, purely temporal effect — the transverse redshift — is time dilation announcing itself in the only place classical physics left blank.

Figure
Boosts shear the light cone — frequency stretch and direction tilt are one motion of one null vector
k^μ lives on the cone; a boost slides it ALONG the cone ω/c k_x light cone — invariant k (source frame) k′ (approaching observer) longer up the cone = blueshift; tilted toward motion = aberration one boost, two laws time slot: ω′ = γω(1 − β cosθ) Doppler — incl. transverse γ space slots: cosθ′ = (cosθ − β)/(1 − β cosθ) aberration — the tilt null norm k·k = 0: preserved — light stays light, ω′ = c|k′| automatic the shear is why no correct Doppler formula lacks an angle and no correct aberration formula lacks a γ — they are slots of one transformation

One bookkeeping distinction to arm yourself with, because the neighboring machinery uses a near-identical factor for a different job: E9's Liénard–Wiechert Potentials carries the denominator (1−n^⋅β)−1(1-\hat{\mathbf{n}}\cdot\boldsymbol{\beta})^{-1} as an amplitude factor — light-cone counting at one emission event — and that article is explicit that it is not a Doppler shift. The Doppler factor of this article compares rates between events: how many crests (or photons, or clock ticks) per observer second. The two conspire in observed flux (one power of δ\delta from photon energies, one from arrival rates, two from solid-angle focusing — the δ3–4\delta^{3\text{–}4} of the jet business), and keeping their origins separate is what keeps the exponent honest.

The transformation, once

Both laws come from writing kμk^\mu in the source frame SS (photon emitted at angle θ\theta to the xx-axis: kμ=ωc(1,cos⁡θ,sin⁡θ,0)k^\mu=\tfrac{\omega}{c}(1,\cos\theta,\sin\theta,0)) and boosting to a frame S′S' moving at +β+\beta along xx:

ω′=γω (1−βcos⁡θ),(1)\omega'=\gamma\omega\,(1-\beta\cos\theta), \qquad (1)

where: θ\theta is the propagation angle in the unprimed frame, and the formula answers "what frequency does the moving observer measure for the wave that, in SS, runs at angle θ\theta." Head-on reception (θ=π\theta=\pi toward an approaching observer — mind the geometry, the warning band drills it) gives the longitudinal law ω′=ω(1+β)/(1−β)\omega'=\omega\sqrt{(1+\beta)/(1-\beta)}; broadside gives the transverse shift; and the O(β)O(\beta) expansion ω′≈ω(1−βcos⁡θ)\omega'\approx\omega(1-\beta\cos\theta) is Doppler's 1842 acoustics formula with the medium deleted. The spatial slots of the same boost deliver

cos⁡θ′=cos⁡θ−β1−βcos⁡θ,(2)\cos\theta'=\frac{\cos\theta-\beta}{1-\beta\cos\theta}, \qquad (2)

where: the map (2) tilts propagation directions away from the observer's direction of motion: cos⁡θ′−cos⁡θ=−βsin⁡2θ/(1−βcos⁡θ)≤0\cos\theta'-\cos\theta=-\beta\sin^{2}\theta/(1-\beta\cos\theta)\le 0, so θ′≥θ\theta'\ge\theta for every θ\theta. Apparent source positions still crowd forward, as stellar aberration requires, because the direction to a source is opposite the direction its light travels — the one sign in this subject that is easiest to lose. The two formulas share their denominator because they share their parent; it is convenient to name it once:

δ≡1γ(1−βcos⁡θ),(3)\delta\equiv\frac{1}{\gamma(1-\beta\cos\theta)}, \qquad (3)

where: δ\delta — the Doppler factor. Note the change of convention here: in (1) and (2) θ\theta is the propagation angle measured in the source frame, while in (3) and everything downstream θ\theta is the observer-frame angle between the line of sight and the velocity of an approaching source — the standard astrophysical usage, and the one the jet and CMB material below needs. Read that way, δ\delta is the single dial of relativistic phenomenology: received frequency =δ×=\delta\times emitted; received photon rate =δ×=\delta\times emitted rate; solid angles compress by δ2\delta^2; and a moving blackbody's temperature reads T′=δTT'=\delta T direction by direction (blackbody spectra are shape-invariant under (1) — the fact the CMB example cashes).

Derivation ABoost the null vector — Doppler and aberration in one computation

We transform kμk^\mu once and read out equations (1) and (2), then run the audits that certify the result: the null norm must survive (light stays light), the classical limit must lose its medium asymmetry, and the photon reading must match four-momentum bookkeeping. The strategy is the chapter's standard one — write the components, apply the boost matrix of Lorentz Transformations, interpret — and its brevity is the content: what pre-relativistic wave theory assembled from separate source-motion and observer-motion arguments, with a medium referee, is here one matrix acting on one vector. Watch the angle bookkeeping: every quantity is labeled by the frame that measures it, which is the entire defense against this subject's notorious sign errors.

Step 1. Certify and write the object. The phase ϕ=−kμxμ\phi=-k_\mu x^\mu counts wave crests past events — a tally all observers share — so kμk^\mu is a four-vector by the quotient argument (Four-Vectors and the Metric Tensor, its photon drill now graduating). For light, ω=c∣k∣\omega=c|\mathbf{k}| makes it null. In SS, for propagation at angle θ\theta in the xyxy-plane:

kμ=ωc (1, cos⁡θ, sin⁡θ, 0),k⋅k=0.k^\mu=\frac{\omega}{c}\,(1,\ \cos\theta,\ \sin\theta,\ 0), \qquad k\cdot k=0 .

Step 2. Boost. With S′S' moving at +βx^+\beta\hat{\mathbf{x}}, the standard matrix gives the primed components:

ω′c=γ(ωc−β ωccos⁡θ)  ⟹   ω′=γω(1−βcos⁡θ) \frac{\omega'}{c}=\gamma\left(\frac{\omega}{c}-\beta\,\frac{\omega}{c}\cos\theta\right) \;\Longrightarrow\; \boxed{\ \omega'=\gamma\omega(1-\beta\cos\theta)\ }
kx′=γ(ωccos⁡θ−βωc),ky′=ωcsin⁡θ.k'_x=\gamma\left(\frac{\omega}{c}\cos\theta-\beta\frac{\omega}{c}\right), \qquad k'_y=\frac{\omega}{c}\sin\theta .

Step 3. Read the direction. The primed propagation angle is cos⁡θ′=ckx′/ω′\cos\theta'=ck'_x/\omega'; dividing the two boxed lines, the γω\gamma\omega's cancel:

cos⁡θ′=cos⁡θ−β1−βcos⁡θ,sin⁡θ′=sin⁡θγ (1−βcos⁡θ).\cos\theta'=\frac{\cos\theta-\beta}{1-\beta\cos\theta}, \qquad \sin\theta'=\frac{\sin\theta}{\gamma\,(1-\beta\cos\theta)} .

Why aberration was inevitable: ky′=kyk'_y=k_y (transverse momenta are boost-blind) while ω′\omega' changes — the direction cosines must renormalize. Frequency shift without direction tilt would violate the null norm.

Step 4. The audits. Null norm: ω′2/c2−∣k′∣2=0\omega'^2/c^2-|\mathbf{k}'|^2=0 by direct substitution (light stays light — the fixed point Lorentz Transformations built into the velocity addition, and Lorentz Invariants of the Field certified for the wave's field pair). Classical limit: to O(β)O(\beta), ω′=ω(1−βcos⁡θ)\omega'=\omega(1-\beta\cos\theta) — the acoustic formula with the medium's asymmetry gone: source-moving and observer-moving cases, distinct for sound at O(β2/βsound...)O(\beta^2/\beta_{\text{sound}}...), collapse into one relative-velocity law. Photon consistency: multiply kμk^\mu by ℏ\hbar and the boxed line is the transformation of a photon's energy, E′=γE(1−βcos⁡θ)E'=\gamma E(1-\beta\cos\theta), matching Relativistic Energy and Four-Momentum's null four-momentum with no separate postulate — the classical and quantum descriptions of light share one kinematics, ℏ\hbar entering only as the exchange rate. As a quick anchor: the β=0.6\beta=0.6 head-on factor evaluates to (1+β)/(1−β)=2.0\sqrt{(1+\beta)/(1-\beta)}=2.0, consistent with the four-vector drill in Four-Vectors and the Metric Tensor.

Derivation BTime dilation in the blank slot — transverse Doppler, Ives–Stilwell, and the headlight theorem

Three harvests from equation (1)'s purely relativistic content. First we isolate the transverse shift and show it is time dilation, no more and no less. Then we replay the 1938 Ives–Stilwell measurement, which extracted that γ\gamma longitudinally — by averaging forward and backward shifts so the classical first-order terms cancel — the design that made a 10−510^{-5} effect measurable with 1930s spectroscopy. Finally we differentiate the aberration map into the solid-angle transformation and prove the headlight theorem: an isotropic emitter at Lorentz factor γ\gamma sends half its photons into a forward cone of half-angle ≈1/γ\approx1/\gamma. Watch one γ\gamma do all three jobs; the effects differ only in where the observer stands.

Step 1. Transverse shift. Set the reception geometry broadside: the observer in S′S' receives the wave at θ′=90°\theta'=90° — light arriving perpendicular to the relative motion. Inverting equation (1) (or applying it from S′S''s viewpoint with the source moving):

ωobs=ω0γ.\omega_{\text{obs}}=\frac{\omega_0}{\gamma} .

A redshift with no radial motion: the source's oscillators simply tick slow by γ\gamma, per Proper Time and Four-Velocity, and the wave reports the tick rate. Classically this slot is exactly zero (no radial velocity, no shift), which is what makes it the clean test: any nonzero transverse shift is relativity, with nothing classical to subtract.

Step 2. Ives–Stilwell: the γ\gamma without the geometry. Holding a 90°90° reception angle to spectroscopic accuracy is hopeless; Ives and Stilwell instead ran hydrogen ions down a tube at β≈5×10−3\beta\approx5\times10^{-3} and photographed the Hβ_\beta line simultaneously along and against the beam:

fb=f01+β1−β,fr=f01−β1+β,fb+fr2=γf0.f_{b}=f_0\sqrt{\frac{1+\beta}{1-\beta}}, \qquad f_{r}=f_0\sqrt{\frac{1-\beta}{1+\beta}}, \qquad \frac{f_b+f_r}{2}=\gamma f_0 .

The first-order terms — enormous by comparison — cancel in the average, leaving the pure time-dilation factor as a displacement of the line-pair's center: at β=0.005\beta=0.005, γ−1=1.25×10−5\gamma-1=1.25\times10^{-5}, a center shift of 0.0610.061 Å on the 4861 Å line — exactly the scale their plates recorded. Modern descendants (saturation spectroscopy on stored Li+^+ beams at β=0.34\beta=0.34) run the same average to a few parts in 10910^{9}: the transverse Doppler slot is among the best-tested predictions in physics.

Step 3. The headlight theorem. Differentiate the aberration map (2):

dcos⁡θ′dcos⁡θ=1γ2(1−βcos⁡θ)2⟹dΩ′dΩ=δ2,\frac{d\cos\theta'}{d\cos\theta}=\frac{1}{\gamma^2(1-\beta\cos\theta)^2} \qquad\Longrightarrow\qquad \frac{d\Omega'}{d\Omega}=\delta^{2},

solid angles compress by the square of the Doppler factor (3). For an emitter isotropic in its own frame, set cos⁡θ=0\cos\theta=0 (the source-frame equator, containing half the photons): equation (2) maps it to cos⁡θ′=−β\cos\theta'=-\beta, i.e. sin⁡θ′=1/γ\sin\theta'=1/\gamma. Half of everything the source emits arrives inside a cone of half-angle ≈1/γ\approx1/\gamma around its velocity (5.7°5.7° at γ=10\gamma=10). This is the kinematic engine of relativistic beaming: E9's Relativistic Larmor Formula (Liénard's Result) found the 1/γ1/\gamma cone dynamically in the radiation pattern of an accelerated charge; here the same cone appears for any emission whatsoever — spectral lines, thermal glow, particle decay products — because it is a property of the map, not of the emitter. As numerical anchors: at β=0.005\beta=0.005, γ−1=1.2500×10−5\gamma-1=1.2500\times10^{-5}, giving a center-of-line shift of Δλcenter=0.0608\Delta\lambda_{\text{center}}=0.0608 Å on Hβ_\beta; and differentiating the aberration map confirms the solid-angle Jacobian dΩ′/dΩ=δ2d\Omega'/d\Omega=\delta^2 with the half-power cone at sin⁡θ′=1/γ\sin\theta'=1/\gamma.

Worked examples

Example 1 — the CMB dipole: our speedometer against the universe. The cosmic microwave background is a T0=2.7255T_0=2.7255 K blackbody, extraordinarily uniform in the frame in which it is isotropic. The Solar System moves through that frame at v=370v=370 km/s (β=1.23×10−3\beta=1.23\times10^{-3}).

Step 1. A moving observer sees each sky direction Doppler-retuned by (3): T(θobs)=δ T0≈T0(1+βcos⁡θobs)T(\theta_{\text{obs}})=\delta\,T_0\approx T_0(1+\beta\cos\theta_{\text{obs}}) at first order — a blackbody stays a blackbody with a direction-dependent temperature (the shape-invariance of the Planck spectrum under (1)).

Step 2. The amplitude: ΔT=βT0=(1.23×10−3)(2.7255 K)=3.36\Delta T=\beta T_0=(1.23\times10^{-3})(2.7255\ \text{K})=3.36 mK — a hot pole toward our motion (constellation Crater/Leo), a cold pole behind, precisely the dipole COBE and Planck map and subtract before cosmology begins.

Step 3. The consistency check that closes the loop: the same β\beta must aberrate the CMB — every anisotropy pattern shifted forward by ≈βsin⁡θ∼4′\approx\beta\sin\theta\sim4' — and Planck detected exactly this aberration (2013), with the velocity it implies agreeing with the dipole's. One four-vector, both slots, measured independently on the same sky.

Example 2 — a blazar jet at γ=10\gamma=10: beaming and the superluminal illusion. A knot of jet plasma moves at γ=10\gamma=10 (β=0.99499\beta=0.99499) at θobs=5°\theta_{\text{obs}}=5° to our line of sight.

Step 1. Doppler factor (3): 1−βcos⁡5°=8.80×10−31-\beta\cos5°=8.80\times10^{-3}, so δ=1/(10×8.80×10−3)=11.4\delta=1/(10\times8.80\times10^{-3})=11.4. Every emitted frequency arrives multiplied by 11.4; every second of source evolution plays back in 88 ms.

Step 2. Flux boosting: for a discrete blob the observed flux scales as δ3\delta^{3} (two powers from solid-angle focusing, one from photon energy... with the rate compression folded per the blob convention) ≈1.5×103\approx1.5\times10^{3}; with the continuous-jet convention δ4≈1.7×104\delta^4\approx1.7\times10^{4}. Either way: the approaching jet outshines its receding twin by ∼δ6–8\sim\delta^{6\text{–}8} — six to eight orders of magnitude — which is why so many jets look one-sided. The counter-jet is not absent; it is de-beamed.

Step 3. Superluminal motion, honestly: the knot's apparent transverse speed is

βapp=βsin⁡θ1−βcos⁡θ=0.99499×0.08728.80×10−3=9.9.\beta_{\text{app}}=\frac{\beta\sin\theta}{1-\beta\cos\theta} =\frac{0.99499\times0.0872}{8.80\times10^{-3}}=9.9 .

The knot appears to cross the sky at 9.9c9.9c. No law breaks: the knot nearly chases its own light, so successive photons leave from much closer to us than naive bookkeeping assumes, compressing the apparent timeline — the same (1−βcos⁡θ)(1-\beta\cos\theta) at work. Radio interferometry sees exactly such ∼10c\sim10c proper motions in 3C 273 and its cousins; inverting the pair (δ,βapp)(\delta,\beta_{\text{app}}) is how jet Lorentz factors are measured.

Is the transverse Doppler shift really nothing but time dilation?

At exact broadside reception, yes — algebraically and conceptually. The received frequency counts the source's oscillation cycles per observer second; with no radial motion at that instant, no crests bunch or stretch en route, and the only physics left is that the moving oscillator ticks slow by γ\gamma. That is why the effect is a clean relativity test: classical wave theory, with any medium and any mechanism, predicts exactly zero in that slot. The subtlety that keeps examiners employed is which perpendicular: perpendicular at reception gives the redshift ω0/γ\omega_0/\gamma; perpendicular at emission (in the source frame) gives a blueshift γω0\gamma\omega_0 — both pure time dilation, viewed from the two frames, connected by aberration. State the geometry, and the paradox dissolves into bookkeeping.

Why does sound distinguish a moving source from a moving observer while light cannot?

Sound has a medium, and the medium is a third party with a rest frame: "source at rest in the air, observer moving" and the reverse are physically different setups, and the classical formulas differ at second order (f=f0(1±β)f=f_0(1\pm\beta) versus f=f0/(1∓β)f=f_0/(1\mp\beta)). Light in vacuum has no third party — that is postulate territory (Postulates of Special Relativity's magnet-and-conductor scandal, resolved by deleting the aether) — so only the relative velocity can appear, and equation (1) is necessarily symmetric under exchanging who "really" moves. The neat quantitative statement: expand the relativistic formula and the two classical formulas in β\beta; all agree at first order, and relativity's second-order term, 12β2\tfrac12\beta^2-ish, splits the difference between the two classical predictions exactly — the γ\gamma democratically arbitrating a dispute the medium used to referee.

How do successive Doppler shifts compose — if A recedes from B and B recedes from C, do the redshifts add?

The factors multiply; equivalently, in the language this chapter keeps recommending, the rapidities add. The longitudinal factor is k=(1+β)/(1−β)=eηk=\sqrt{(1+\beta)/(1-\beta)}=e^{\eta} with η\eta the rapidity of Lorentz Transformations, so chaining boosts gives ktot=k1k2k_{\text{tot}}=k_1k_2 — never add zz's: (1+ztot)=(1+z1)(1+z2)(1+z_{\text{tot}})=(1+z_1)(1+z_2). This multiplicativity is the working heart of Bondi's "k-calculus" formulation of special relativity, where the Doppler factor is the primitive object and velocity addition is derived from k1k2k_1k_2. It also disciplines astronomical practice: a source's peculiar-velocity redshift and the cosmological redshift compose multiplicatively, and the small-z habit of adding them is a first-order approximation that fails exactly when the numbers get interesting.

Does the sky really look different to a fast-moving observer — what would I actually see?

Yes, dramatically, and in three superposed ways this article prices: aberration crowds star positions toward your direction of motion (at γ=10\gamma=10, half the celestial sphere packs into a 6°6° circle ahead); Doppler retunes each source (ahead blueshifted by up to 2γ2\gamma, behind redshifted); and intensity boosts by δ3–4\delta^{3\text{–}4} (the forward sky blazes, the rear sky nearly vanishes). Two famous refinements. The CMB becomes visible structure: at high γ\gamma the 2.7 K background blueshifts into the visible band ahead of you — the "headlight" you fly into is mostly the universe itself. And the shapes of objects do not look Lorentz-contracted: Terrell and Penrose showed (1959) that light-travel-time across an object conspires with aberration so a passing sphere presents a rotated, not flattened, face. Aberration is the honest answer to "what does relativity look like": not squashed rulers but a remapped, retuned, re-weighted sky.

Is the cosmological redshift a Doppler shift in this article's sense?

Locally yes, globally it is better bookkeeping to say no — and the honest framing matters. For nearby galaxies (z≪1z\ll1) the recession redshift is indistinguishable from equation (1) with β=H0d/c\beta=H_0d/c, and treating it as Doppler is exact enough. At large zz the clean statement is geometric: the wavelength stretches with the universe's scale factor, 1+z=anow/athen1+z=a_{\text{now}}/a_{\text{then}}, which equals an accumulation of infinitesimal Doppler shifts between chains of local observers but does not correspond to any single relative velocity in one inertial frame (there is none spanning cosmological distances). The distinction has teeth: "superluminal recession" of high-zz galaxies breaks no law precisely because it is not a velocity in the special-relativistic sense, and applying equation (1) with β>1\beta>1 is a category error rather than a paradox. This article's formulas govern kinematic shifts — jets, orbits, the dipole; the expansion's shift is their curved-spacetime cousin, handled by the general-relativity track.

The CMB dipole gives our absolute velocity — does that not contradict relativity?

No, and the resolution sharpens what relativity actually forbids. The principle says no experiment can detect uniform motion relative to spacetime — the laws are the same in every inertial frame. It does not say every frame's contents look the same: the CMB is matter (well, radiation) filling space, and it happens to define a frame in which it is isotropic, exactly as the air in a hall defines a rest frame for sound. Measuring our 370 km/s against the photon bath is measuring motion relative to stuff, not relative to space — no different in principle from measuring your speed relative to the highway, and Maxwell's equations remain perfectly intact in our moving frame (the whole covariance theorem of this chapter). The deep contrast: pre-relativistic physics expected the laws (via the aether) to pick a frame; the CMB only shows the initial conditions picked one. Motion with respect to a cosmic dataset is physics; motion with respect to the vacuum is meaningless — the dipole illustrates the difference rather than violating it.

Where does Planck's constant enter when I switch between wave Doppler and photon Doppler?

Nowhere essential — that is the elegant point. The classical statement transforms ω\omega; the quantum statement transforms photon energy EE; and since E=ℏωE=\hbar\omega with ℏ\hbar a Lorentz-invariant constant, the two statements are the same transformation law wearing different units — Derivation A's audit made this explicit by multiplying the boosted kμk^\mu by ℏ\hbar and recovering the four-momentum law of Relativistic Energy and Four-Momentum. What quantum mechanics adds is not a modified shift but new observables riding the same law: photon number is frame-invariant (rates transform, counts of discrete detections at a given detector do not), recoil bookkeeping in emission gets the ℏk\hbar k kick (the Mössbauer-effect corner of Doppler physics), and laser-cooling forces arise from the velocity dependence equation (1) gives to absorption probability. The compatibility is one more instance of this chapter's refrain: light's classical four-vector kinematics survives quantization untouched — which is precisely why the classical machinery built here remains load-bearing all the way into QED.
