Problem

A crest on a sinusoidal wave moving along a taut wire is located at x=1.20 mx = 1.20\,\text{m} at t=0t = 0 and at x=1.50 mx = 1.50\,\text{m} at t=0.020 st = 0.020\,\text{s}. The distance between this crest and the nearest trough is measured to be 0.40 m0.40\,\text{m}, and the maximum displacement of the wire is 3.0 cm3.0\,\text{cm}. (i) Determine the wavelength of the wave. (ii) Calculate the frequency of the wave. (iii) Write a possible mathematical equation for the travelling wave, taking displacements in centimetres. (iv) Using your results, draw the displacement–position graph of the wave at t=0.030 st = 0.030\,\text{s} for the region 1.0 m≤x≤1.8 m1.0\,\text{m} \le x \le 1.8\,\text{m}.
