Problem

In an interference experiment, two identical parallel slits each of width 0.20 mm0.20\,\text{mm} are separated by a distance of 0.60 mm0.60\,\text{mm}. The slits are illuminated by monochromatic light of wavelength 600 nm600\,\text{nm}. (a) Write the separate mathematical conditions for (i) interference maxima and (ii) diffraction minima produced by the arrangement. (b) Determine which orders of interference maxima will be missing (absent) in the observed pattern. (c) Calculate the smallest positive angular position (measured from the central axis) at which a missing order occurs. (d) Sketch qualitatively the resulting intensity distribution as a function of angle, clearly indicating the missing orders identified in part (b).
