Problem
A ceramic tile used inside a high-temperature furnace behaves almost like a perfect blackbody. Under normal operation the intensity of its emitted radiation is maximum at 1.2μm. For a particular experiment the furnace temperature is raised until the peak of the emission spectrum shifts to 0.60μm. Constants: σ=5.67×10−8W m−2K−4, b=2.9×10−3m K.
(i) Calculate the initial and final absolute temperatures of the tile.
(ii) Show that the total radiant power per unit area emitted by the tile increases by a factor of 16 when the peak wavelength is halved, and verify this factor numerically using the temperatures obtained in part (i).
(iii) State how the visible colour of the emitted light would change as the tile is heated through this temperature range.
