Problem

A ray of light travels from air into turpentine. For turpentine, the absolute refractive index is 1.47. The speed of light in vacuum may be taken as 3.0×108 m s−13.0\times10^{8}\,\text{m s}^{-1}. (i) Calculate the speed of light in turpentine. (ii) How much time will the ray take to cross a layer of turpentine 0.50 m0.50\,\text{m} thick?
