Problem

Define S=∑k=0n(−3)k (nk) 2 n−kS=\displaystyle \sum_{k=0}^{n} (-3)^{k}\,{n\choose k}\,2^{\,n-k}. (i) Express SS as the value of a single power expression obtained by expanding a suitable binomial. (ii) Hence evaluate SS for (a) n=5n=5 and (b) general nn. (iii) Using your result from part (ii), find the value of ∑k=010(−1)k (10k) 310−k\displaystyle \sum_{k=0}^{10} (-1)^{k}\,{10\choose k}\,3^{10-k}.
