Problem

Two tuning forks, A and B, are struck successively to produce sound in air at 20∘C20^{\circ}\text{C}. Fork A vibrates at 256 Hz256\,\text{Hz} while fork B vibrates at 512 Hz512\,\text{Hz}. Both tuning forks are set into vibration with the same amplitude. (i) Calculate the time period of vibration of each tuning fork. (ii) Which fork produces the sound of higher pitch? Justify your choice. (iii) Compare the loudness of the two sounds. (iv) If the speed of sound in air is 340 m s−1340\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}, find the wavelength of the sound produced by each fork.
