Problem

A horizontally polarized microwave beam in air has intensity 8.0×102 W ⁣⋅ ⁣m−28.0\times10^{2}\,\text{W}\!\cdot\!\text{m}^{-2} and wavelength 3.0 cm3.0\,\text{cm}. The beam first strikes a dielectric slab (n=2.0n=2.0) at normal incidence, passes entirely through the slab without absorption, and then encounters two successive ideal linear polarizers. The transmission axis of the first polarizer is oriented 30° above the horizontal, and that of the second is oriented 60° above the horizontal. (a) Determine the wavelength of the microwaves while they are inside the dielectric slab. (b) State the intensity of the beam emerging from the far side of the slab. Explain your reasoning. (c) Calculate the intensity of the beam immediately after it passes through the first polarizer. (d) Calculate the intensity of the beam after it passes through the second polarizer.
