Problem

In a Young’s double-slit arrangement, monochromatic light of wavelength 600 nm600\,\text{nm} falls on two very narrow slits separated by 0.40 mm0.40\,\text{mm}. The interference pattern is observed on a screen 1.2 m1.2\,\text{m} away from the slits. (a) Calculate the fringe width on the screen. (b) A point PP on the screen is located 2.0 mm2.0\,\text{mm} above the central bright fringe. Determine the path difference between the two waves arriving at PP and state whether PP lies on a bright or a dark fringe. (c) How far from the central bright fringe will the ninth bright fringe be observed?
