Problem

While driving, a motorist relies on the right-side exterior mirror to monitor traffic approaching from behind and alongside the vehicle. Those mirrors are almost always outwardly curved rather than flat. Assume the mirror is a section of a spherical surface and that objects of interest are several metres away so that light rays arriving at the mirror may be treated as coming from a single point object on the principal axis. (a) Describe two key characteristics of the image produced by such a mirror that make it advantageous for this application. (b) Using the standard sign conventions for focal length and image distance, explain which combination of signs corresponds to the mirror used on the vehicle. Relate your explanation to the characteristics identified in part (a). (c) Many mirrors carry the warning "Objects in mirror are closer than they appear." Explain this statement in terms of the magnification produced by the mirror and how the magnification depends qualitatively on the distance of the object from the mirror.
