Problem

In a laboratory a student sends a single sound pulse along a stretched spring toy (slinky). She observes that three complete wavelengths travel a distance of 1.2 m1.2\,\text{m} in 0.015 s0.015\,\text{s}. (a) Calculate the wavelength of the wave in the slinky. (b) Using the data above, determine the speed of the wave. (c) From your answers in (a) and (b), derive a general relation linking the speed vv, wavelength λ\lambda, and frequency ν\nu of any wave. (d) Using the relation obtained in part (c), compute the frequency of the wave produced in this experiment.
