Problem

An ant moves on a flat table following the successive straight-line segments shown below (all distances are in metres): A(0,0)→B(5,0)→C(5,4)→D(1,4)→E(1,1)A(0,0) \rightarrow B(5,0) \rightarrow C(5,4) \rightarrow D(1,4) \rightarrow E(1,1). After reaching EE it stops. (i) Calculate the total distance travelled by the ant. (ii) Determine the displacement vector AE→\overrightarrow{AE} and its magnitude. (iii) Find the ratio of the distance travelled to the magnitude of displacement, expressing your answer correct to two decimal places. (iv) If the ant had crawled straight from AA to EE, what would have been the distance covered? Comment briefly on how this value relates to your results in parts (i) and (ii).
