Problem

Three ropes pull on an iron ring fixed to a hook. The first rope exerts a horizontal force of 60 N60\,\text{N} towards the east, the second exerts a vertical force of 80 N80\,\text{N} towards the north, and the third exerts a force of 100 N100\,\text{N} directed 53∘53^{\circ} south of west. (a) Using the scale 1 cm=10 N1\,\text{cm} = 10\,\text{N}, draw the three forces one after another in the order given, starting from a single point. (b) Complete the diagram to find the resultant force acting on the ring by the vector addition of the three forces. Measure its magnitude and state its direction. (c) Comment on whether the ring is in equilibrium and explain your reasoning on the basis of the diagram you have drawn.
