Problem
A metal sheet is fixed in the ground so that it makes an angle of 30∘ with the horizontal ground. A whistle placed 1.5m above the ground sends out a narrow horizontal beam of sound towards the sheet.
(i) Draw a labelled diagram showing the incident ray, the normal to the sheet at the point of incidence, and the reflected ray.
(ii) Find the angle that the reflected beam makes with the horizontal ground.
(iii) If the sheet is slowly tilted so that it makes an angle of 45∘ with the ground, while the whistle position remains unchanged, determine the new angle made by the reflected beam with the horizontal.
