Problem

In an interference experiment, the quantities measured are: • Wavelength λ=(600±2) nm\lambda = (600 \pm 2)\,\text{nm} • Slit–screen distance D=(1.20±0.10) mD = (1.20 \pm 0.10)\,\text{m} • Slit separation d=(0.300±0.005) mmd = (0.300 \pm 0.005)\,\text{mm} (a) Derive an expression for the percentage error in the calculated fringe width in terms of the percentage errors in λ\lambda, DD and dd. (b) Using the given measurements, compute the numerical value of the fringe width and its percentage error. (c) Hence determine the absolute uncertainty in the fringe width and express the final result with its uncertainty.
