Problem

Inside a long horizontal tube a longitudinal sound wave is produced at one instant. The centre of the first compression is at x=0.08 mx = 0.08\,\text{m} and the centre of the fifth rarefaction is at x=1.52 mx = 1.52\,\text{m}. (i) Show that the wavelength of the wave is 0.32 m0.32\,\text{m}. (ii) Draw a neat, labelled transverse sketch of the same wave over a length of two complete wavelengths, marking amplitude and wavelength clearly. (iii) If the amplitude of particle oscillation is 5 mm5\,\text{mm}, state how the loudness of the sound will change when the amplitude is increased to 10 mm10\,\text{mm} while keeping the wavelength unchanged. Give a reason. (iv) The time required for one complete oscillation of a particle is 0.0010 s0.0010\,\text{s}. Calculate the speed of the wave.
