Problem
A light, flexible string is stretched horizontally between two supports that are far apart. A student gives the left end of the string a single upward flick, creating a transverse wave pulse that moves toward the right support. The speed of the pulse along the string has previously been measured to be 2.5m/s. The point on the string that was displaced is located 5.0m from the right support.
(a) Calculate the time it takes the crest of the pulse to reach the right support.
(b) After the crest has passed the point originally flicked, describe qualitatively how that particular segment of string moves until it returns to its equilibrium position. Your answer should refer to the direction of displacement and the shape of the passing disturbance.
(c) Explain why energy is transferred to the right without any net transport of the string material itself. In your explanation, comment on the role of particle interactions within the string.
