Problem

A laboratory worksheet provides a scale ray diagram (drawn by a previous class) of a plane mirror on a sheet where 1 cm represents 5 cm in reality. In the diagram the point where the reflected rays appear to intersect behind the mirror is marked 4.0 cm behind the mirror surface. The tip of the object arrow is marked 3.8 cm in front of the mirror surface. Assume that the drawing is perfectly accurate and that all measurements were made along the principal axis. (a) Using only the numerical information given in the description, determine the actual object distance sos_o and the image distance sis_i in centimetres. (b) Explain whether the numerical results obtained in part (a) are consistent with the known properties of images formed by a plane mirror. (c) If the object arrow is 1.5 cm tall in the scale diagram, determine its actual height and the height of the image. Explain any assumptions made in your reasoning.
